The pommel chip changes on the TA-082 only because all boards up to the TA-081 were running with a 3.3v I/O CPU. When the TA-082 released they changed the NAND flash bus to operate at 1.8v, making the DMS3 made "Undiluted Platinum" modchip useless. That same board contained a modification on the clock generator circuit which made the old kernel 1.5 unusable, breaking the hacks for a while.

The Pommel version change reflects the changes on the power circuitry.
